October in the DMV and surrounding areas is brimming with activities ranging from Halloween-themed to historic – and many are a mixture of both. Bonus: the weather is just right – not too hot, not too cold. Perfect sweater weather. Check out this sampling of fun events happening in D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.
 

Frederick’s Historic District Ghost Tours

Throughout October on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays by reservation

Take a journey through Frederick’s frightening past – nearly 300 years of war, executions, and personal revenge. This Rated PG-13 tour includes “true, documented” stories of the paranormal and is purported to be Maryland’s oldest operating ghost tour. Tours are 90 minutes and cover 1.2 miles. They are not recommended for young children. 
 

Highland Games of Harpers Ferry

Enjoy the age-old Scottish tradition of competitive games from the tossing of a caber end over end, to throwing stones and hammers. This Celtic-themed event will have vendors, live music, food, beer garden and bar, traditional dancing, and more. Friday’s kick-off party starts at 5 p.m. and will be held in The Barn at 1062 W. Washington Street. Saturday’s event is at Sam Michael’s Park.
 

Waterford Fair

The National Historic Landmark of Waterford in Western Loudoun County was formed in 1733. The Waterford Foundation’s “Waterford Fair,” now in its 79th year, celebrates the charming village by demonstrating fine heritage and contemporary craft artisans, living historians, a juried art show, historic properties tour, local libations, and entertainment.
 

Taste of Bethesda

Enjoy great grub as Bethesda’s best restaurants offer up their finest fare from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to this international feast featuring more than 60 establishments, there will also be five stages of live entertainment – jazz performers, dance troupes, etc. – and activities for kids. More than 500 antique and classic automobiles from more than 30 car clubs will be on display for collectors and enthusiasts to enjoy. This event is free, and also features a flea market, car sales area, live music, and food and drink available for purchase.

Broadway’s creative twist on The Wizard of Oz is returning for tour after 40 years. The score features soul, gospel, rock, and funk as Dorothy and her friends “Ease on Down the Road.” ASL Interpretation and audio description will be available during the 2 p.m. performance on Oct. 28.
 

Trick-or-Treating at Mount Vernon

Celebrate Halloween with a bit of education and culture at George Washington’s Mount Vernon from 2 to 6 p.m. In addition to collecting candy around the historic grounds, you’ll also be able to meet the General and Lady Washington, watch your children in a costume parade, and enjoy 18th-century entertainment including a puppet show, dancing, and magic.
